The Van Gogh defense

CBS's indignant defense, from the very beginning of this fiasco, has included the claim that the memos are consistent with Killian's known attitude regarding Bush. Let's set aside for the moment the fact that this point is hotly contested, including by his son and his widow. By CBS's logic, I could get out some finger paint and some laser printer paper, whip up a portrait of a redheaded man minus an ear, and bingo, I'd have an authentic Van Gogh. After all, everybody knows that Van Gogh liked to paint self-portraits, therefore my painting must be genuine. The fact that it uses materials that did not exist in Van Gogh's time is irrelevant.
